Its worh the price, stability and data redundancy are mandatory in this business.
Think about data corruption and what data recovery chances are then you'll reconsider.

I've searched for long and at the end I have bought a Synology Nas solution. They have more scalable solutions and a complete suite of app for mobile. Upgrades, maintenence, stability, security. Synology has any of this quality. Also you can choose by 4 or more bay.

A NAS is no backup. It's a NAS. That's not how backups should look like. You need at least three independet drives with same size which are synced by a software that works with checksums to detect errors. One of those drives should be stored somewhere else like at your parents home for instance.

You can configure a NAS with three or more bay in RAID5. It's a secure and stable backup.

Of course it's better than nothing but it's not how a backup is set up properly. A fire, a lightning strike, a thief or a software bug and everything might be gone. You might say that this happens seldom. True, but IF it happens the damage it causes is big.

It also depends on what you want to backup. Is it just a few TB of stolen tutorials or are these your memories from childhood?

I covered this topic myself a while ago and if you ask any serious computer scientist you will get this answer. There are certain quite simple "rules" how a backup must to be done to be as safe as possible and it does not ever require a lot of money for a pricy NAS.

If you can afford the bandwidth something like Backblzae/large dropbox can be amazing. If something happens to your house/office/pc your files are perfectly safe and retrievable. Or tape on a safety deposit box/at a friends

Just to clarify, I am running RAID5 on my Qnap NAS but plan to move on to RAID6 in the very near future. I agree that RAID5 or RAID6 is not a real backup but just to guard against hard drive failures. I use other drives that I kept offline most of the time to backup my Qnap NAS. Ideally, these offline drives should be kept offsite but I have not done that yet.

Working files are stored in/on a 2TB Pro Dropbox account; after delivery they're moved over to a (currently) 22TB 5D Drobo.

Of course if you want a lifetime stored files in security from fire, thief or other issue, the better thing is a server in a farm. Or Drive file stream for business. No limit, no space on your hard drive, cloud based service.

I am currently going with a 3bay JBOD in an enclosure and updating hard drives every 2-3 years. A quality spinning drive *should* last about 5 so i swap em out before it even hits that mark.

A friend of mine who is working with some important name and take a lot of photo every year is using a Nas + External HDD + an emergency backup with the most important file in a safety deposit box in a bank with a 2TB on it.
I'd say that is extremely cautious!

I'm using a "manual" Nas: i used to have one, but it got broken the motherboard of it, so i've abandoned that solution: instead now, i keep buying two 2TB HDD, one for backup, one for backup of the backup and i keep theme in a safety box full of foam shaped like HDD. HDD are inside a bag of anti-static bag, inside a safe.

Nas are great for backups - I use Western Digital cloud base range - I also backup to a Portable usb3 Drive as a secondary and I have my work files on a Samsung T5 SSD drive for speed. If it is your job I would look into saving backups off Site just like "Lyly19" above me mentioned as well maybe look into "Cloud Storage" options. this might sound over the top but say if you are a wedding photographer or a commercial photographer then these type of thing are worthwhile in the end for peace of mind for you and your client base
