I've noticed alot of posts requesting reups or mirrors. If I've downloaded the content, I make an effort to mirror if the op is either AWOL or no longer has the item. WHen there are 138 "likes", assuming all of them dl the offer, I find it VERY difficult to understand why ONE of them does not provide a mirror. STEP up people.
Yeah - it's good to give a little where obviously this forum offers so much for one "to get" . . . hit & runs aren't cool . . .
Could be unfair on the original poster if the mirror ends up getting more then the person who posted it. Personally I do post some mirrors but the rudeness of some requests or people not checking the original before asking for the mirror or asking multiple times for a mirror even after they someone posted a mirror after their original request puts me off it.
I guess that's the whole point of this thread, there is no incentive to posting mirrors other than earning likes... what other incentives can you give without hurting the OP unless you create a separate mirror point system. Also, mirrors tags can also be moderated to prevent abuse or at least give the OP some reasonable time to let them fix the link.
How about free gold for a month if you mirror 5 or more broken links in a month after the OP have not fixed it in 3 days or put a note saying they will fix it soon.
ADMIN---Let's do something to reward mirror providers. If you continue to add new members, the "old" posts are going to more likely have inactive links. Perhaps 15-20 trophy points? Give some initiative here. There aren't that many of us that go to the trouble...not that i need the points, but i miss some posts too.
I'm with @lkngood on this one. I try to keep up with it as much as possible as I've been here so long that I have a backlog of some of the older content, but it's a daily job to keep up. Not to mention the cloud server space. Personally, I'm close to the 10K mark so I do still have a goal to reach as incentive so I'm happy to do it, but past that there still needs to be some kind of reward system.
Mirror is simply a NEW LINK (assuming the original link no longer works) to the same content on a different or possibly the same site.
That's why most of Us ask Give a Like to OP. I post mirrors after I check if the OP is still on this forum, some are way since 4 years ago or more. I respond to the post saying, I have These going to wait some days and then I re-post
I'm not sure how savvy @george is with code or if a solution already exists, but I'd love to see an improved means of addressing the dead link solution. If there's a way to attach a mirror to the original post (sort of like a sticky sub post) then I think that would go a long way. Maybe a [MIRROR] tag that pushes through to mod/admin verification and then becomes sticky if approved? Having to scroll through a bunch of thank yous to get to a bunch of reports of being dead, and then a mirror, and then more reports of being dead probably isn't the best use of everyone's time. No qualms in the points going to whoever ultimately provides the content. I think if a mirror is in view, people will know where to put their respective like - and I don't think it's necessary to give the OP a like unless they're actively maintaining said post. In truth, though, you seldom see mirrors unless the original link is down - so I sincerely doubt OP's likes will be cannibalized by the contributions of others.
Just a thought, would it be possible for OP to automatically receive a like when likes are given to mirrors?
Agree - I try to "clean-up" my personal posts {delete those that indicate a reposting or refresh; minus those that have any "likes" attached - where doing so would subtract from one's total likes} - but the process would benefit from some type of "update" via coding where dated and "older" posts are simply auto-deleted based on a newer mirror being introduced [but only after verification that the prior link is indeed toast; otherwise one could easily take advantage of such a process]. And - the likes tied to the mirror (or series) of same over time be auto-fed to the appropriate posting individual. I don't think this is a good process for two reasons: 1. Newer members would essentially 1/2 their like-limit; further limiting their downloads (is this really a bad thing? depends where one sits, I guess) 2. This "might" support laziness on the effort of the OP for maintaining their posts if s/he is getting auto-likes . . . [This is from the perspective of trying to draw new membership and sustaining a subscription-based platform to keep the joint running; as I think I understand it anyway . . . but each point could easily be modified to address the noted "weaknesses" . . . ]
After reading the suggestions, I have decided that an extra incentive will be added to the member that goes through the trouble of posting mirrors where needed. Starting from now, you will get an extra 10 Trophy Points once you successfully mirror 10 dead links. Since this will be manual, please send me a message with the threads mirrored. Thank you everyone for your suggestions and for working on making this forum better.
