Learn proper focus then use selective focus to make a subject really stand out

I want you to learn how to properly focus your camera effectively and then use selective focus and aperture control to make a subject stand out against a background.

You’ll need a tripod and a zoom lens for this assignment (something around 24-105mm would be perfect but, up to 200mm is fine).

Set up something like a flower vase to take a picture of, outside is best for this exercise or near a really big window. Place it somewhere where there is some background (so, not against a plain wall) Even placed in the middle of a large room is fine.

Make an image at the smallest aperture you can (f16 or 22 is great) You decide where to focus. You may have to increase your ISO in order to keep your shutter speed above 1/30 or so if you're using a tripod) and keep the lens at it’s widest zoom.

Make a second image but this time, keep the lens zoomed all the way wide and adjust the aperture to the widest setting (lowest number) and modify ISO or shutter speed as necessary. Focus in the same place

For the third image zoom all the way in to the tightest setting and adjust the aperture to the smallest aperture (f16 or 22) and modify ISO or shutter speed as necessary. Continue to focus in the same place

For the final image zoom all the way in to the tightest setting again and adjust the aperture to the widest setting (f2.8) and modify ISO or shutter speed as necessary.
