How to Clean Paper Backgrounds in Photoshop

Paper rolls are a common background choice for portrait photography, but they can often look rippled or uneven. To help you overcome this, Karl demonstrates how to quickly and easily remove wrinkles from your background using some basic Photoshop tools.

To start, you’ll learn how to select the subject using two different methods. Karl then shows how you can remove these wrinkles using one very simple tools. You’ll also learn how to remove banding in a background and how to adjust the contrast too.

    This class covers the following:
    • How to smooth paper in Photoshop
    • How to cut out the subject in Photoshop
    • How to separate the subject from the background
    • Using selection tools in Photoshop
    • How to remove banding from an image

Thanks for reposting - and for peeps interested in learning from these videos (KT) - I can't understate the additional information from the actual reference link for each video and the questions / answers presented for each - anyone would potentially benefit from visiting those for the reviewed topic. Little tidbits add up so that you can learn a lot of "tricks" and "tips" - thanks again!

As a side note re "ripples" - I've added a third light-stand with a 2 x 4 with beveled (or drilled-out space to accommodate a nut) for mounting on the light stand. I'll raise this to support the center portion [2 x 4 sits against bottom of roll] of the backdrop (heavy vinyl - 12 feet) to help eliminate some ripples - lifting the center (from behind, of course) tightens the middle areas and slacks the pull from each top corner.
