In this in-depth Photoshop tutorial, I will guide you through my workflow, revised and enriched with new tools and techniques to take your images to a cinematic and evocative level. This is an evolution of my well-known workflow, incorporating additional software and innovative methods to enhance creativity and efficiency.

    What You Will Learn:
✅ How to transform inspiration into a concrete editing process
✅ Time blending to merge different exposures into a single scene
✅ Advanced dodge & burn techniques to sculpt light and shadows
✅ Color grading and toning to create atmosphere and depth
✅ Using luminosity masks for selective image adjustments
✅ Creating and enhancing light for a dramatic impact
✅ Utilizing plugins like Boris FX and Topaz Pure Raw to refine details

Note: While I demonstrate Boris FX and Topaz Pure Raw in the tutorial, these tools are not essential to the workflow. Similar results can be achieved using DxO Color Efex or other alternative plugins.

The latest version of Photoshop is NOT required – the oldest compatible version is Photoshop CC 2013. An intermediate knowledge of Photoshop is required – this is NOT a beginner’s course.

    Workflow Breakdown:
    1. Finding Inspiration & Conceptualizing the Edit
    • How to transform an artistic vision into a photoretouching plan

    • Understanding light, atmosphere, and storytelling in an image

    • Selecting references from paintings, fantasy illustrations, and cinema
    2. Preparing RAW Files & Initial Enhancements
    • Using Topaz Pure Raw for noise reduction and initial sharpening
    • Alternative: RAW processing with DxO PhotoLab
    • Aligning multiple exposures for time blending
    3. Time Blending & Scene Optimization
    • Techniques to merge different moments for the ideal lighting
    • Blending exposures in Photoshop using layer masks and gradients
    4. Dodge & Burn for Depth and Dimension
    • Manual dodge & burn with soft brushes
    • Using luminosity masks for non-destructive adjustments (TK9)
    • Enhancing subject separation and sculpting the light
    5. Luminosity Masks for Selective Adjustments
    • Creating and refining luminosity masks
    • Selective exposure control for highlights, midtones, and shadows
    • Enhancing texture and depth with precision
    6. Color Grading & Toning for a Cinematic Look
    • Using gradient maps, selective color, and curves
    • Simulating cinematic color palettes for a fantasy aesthetic
    7. Creating Light & Enhancing Atmosphere
    • Adding volumetric light and light rays
    • Painting light manually for a natural, painterly effect
    • Adjusting haze and glow for an immersive atmosphere
    8. Final Touches & Exporting
    • Sharpening techniques for web
    • Export settings to preserve quality
At the end of this tutorial, you will have a complete understanding of how to create a dramatic and cinematic image using my advanced photoretouching workflow.

Adobe Photoshop CC 2025, Adobe Bridge, ACR, DxO Nik Collection, Topaz Detail, Boris FX, Tony Kuyper TK9 Panel
(Most of the software used can be replaced with alternative plugins or older versions of Photoshop and plugins. However, for optimal results, I recommend using the software listed above.)

FOR THE BEST VIEWING EXPERIENCE AND COLOR ACCURACY I RECOMMEND VLC Player.
