Photographs illustrate the structure of mountains, plants, animals, and insects and look at the variety of forms that appear in nature.

The Anatomy of Nature is a seminal 1956 photography book by the acclaimed Life magazine photographer and trained architect Andreas Feininger. Subtitled How Function Shapes the Form and Design of Animate and Inanimate Structures Throughout the Universe, the work is highly celebrated for uncovering the hidden geometric principles, textures, and structural rhythms of the natural world through striking black-and-white photography.

    Core Philosophy and Themes
Feininger approached nature with an architect's eye, having previously studied at the Bauhaus and worked under Le Corbusier. Instead of treating nature merely as a scenic backdrop, he used customized telephoto lenses and close-up cameras to isolate and document structural mechanics.
    - Function Shapes Form: Feininger’s primary thesis was that the physical structure of any object—whether living or non-living—is dictated entirely by its evolutionary or mechanical function.
    - The Unity of Nature: In his foreword, Feininger states that the book aims to document a "simple universal plan," proving that completely unrelated natural objects are often constructed using the exact same structural principles.
    - Visual Contrasts: To illustrate this interdependence, the book visually links disparate subjects. For example, he juxtaposes the rings of charred wood magnified 100x against the growth ridges of a clam shell magnified 20x, or compares the structural layout of a Venus comb shell to a fish skeleton or the ribs of a wooden boat.

    Book Structure and Content
    - The Photographic Survey: The book spans 175 pages filled with high-contrast, black-and-white plates. It categorizes natural phenomena into systems, exploring everything from massive geographical entities like rock formations and mountains down to minuscule components like feathers, bones, leaves, shells, and insects.
    - Technical Appendix: Rather than cluttering the images with captions, details about the photographs and the meticulous lighting setups are contained in a concise text section at the back. This section provides unique insights into his advanced nature photography techniques.

    Availability and Editions
The book was originally published in 1956 by Crown Publishers. Due to its lasting impact on both the artistic and scientific appreciation of natural architecture, it was widely re-circulated as a paperback edition by Dover Publications in 1979 and has been featured in retrospective exhibitions like Structures of Nature.
