Hi, I am a photography student and for my final portfolio I have chose to shoot makeup products. I was hoping some of you can share some neat photography ideas and techniques/methods that create cool effects. Like a quick and dirty run down of setups.

Recently I was researching product photographer Norimichi and he uses some sort of colored powder to make neat images. I found that this powder could be made using cornstarch and food dye but I don't know how he makes it explode as seen here. any ideas or techniques you are willing to share would be awesome. thanks in advanced.

hi Luca. Don't use cornstarch and food dye as it'll clump into a mess. Try using powdered pigments instead, but be aware that it's quite fine so it'll end up going everywhere. Keep all surroundings and equipment well covered and wear a mask.

Have a look at some of Karl Taylor's tutorials in this forum. He has some examples of what you're after.

Thank you very much for your answer. Are there any powdered pigments you would recommend?

i put the powder in a large plastic bottle and turned it upside down on a flat surface to get it to billow out. the rest was photoshop and a lot of compositing.
