Volume 1 is only animal painting techniques?

 

Yes and no. This volume is dedicated to development of technique itself (smudge painting), with primary examples on fur and hair. Next volume shows how this technique can be put further in painting portraits. Third one is a bit disconnected from the first two, since it is based on mixed brush and a bit different approach. Personally, as per my taste smudge painting works better and produces more "lifelike" portraits, but this is very subjective thing

What is interesting, there is a course from where he did learn, at least it contains image which he uses on Flickr as a banner

And, as I said smudge painting can produce fantastic results, but it requires a certain skills, a lot of patience (which I don't have ha ha), as well as good knowledge of mixing colors (he shows it also pretty well in his colorization of B&W work).
