Our theme for this episode is One Light, and I’ve got a lot to say about it! I’ve been photographing for more than half of my life and attending photography conferences for most of that. I remember taking classes on using a single light to create portraits and the images they made were always so boring. Looking back now it actually made me think I needed a lot more gear to make interesting images… but that simply isn’t true.

Some of my favorite photographers of all time regularly use a single strobe or even natural light to create iconic images. What makes them so fantastic? First, they have incredible concepts and put striking ideas in front of their lens. Second, they have precise control over that single strobe and can carefully modify their light to flatter their subject or convey a mood.

In this episode, I push myself to see just how much I can do with a single strobe. I try hard light, super soft light, flat light, sculpted light, flagged light, gelled light, and everything in between. I invite you to open your mind to the possibilities of a single strobe, without sticking to the usual (valid but less than thrilling) ‘softbox and reflector’ formula you see so often.
