A headshot is an image of what someone looks like, but a stylized portrait is meant to reveal something more.

    Get creative!

A stylized portrait allows you to tell a story about your subject or reveal something about their character through a combination of concept, lighting, props, styling and more. In other words, I don’t just have my subject show up and snap a few shots. We discuss goals, concepts and styling beforehand in order to create striking imagery where my subject becomes a piece of art!

In this episode, I take time to create portraits of some of the people most important in my life… my creative team! Throughout the day you could feel the buzz of energy in the air with everyone thrilled to create a one-of-a-kind portrait session that helped tell a story of their passions, professions, and uniqueness.

As you’ll see throughout the many subjects in this episode, there is no one right approach to creating a story-telling image. Your subject’s can play a character, live out a fantasy, or simply consider styling to help make the most chic versions of themselves.

Remember that gear is always used in service of achieving the concept… in other words there is no one best lighting or technical approach to this type of photography. You’ll see that at times I use 4 strobes, other times just a single strobe and a scrim, and even just a window to illuminate my subjects.

Each portrait is as unique as the individual I capture. Join me behind the scenes to hear the concepts, the process and enjoy the images!

If you are struggling to come up with ideas for your client, try some of these helpful prompts:

    • If you could live during any time in history, when would that be?
    • Do you have a favorite TV show or movie?
    • Do you have a favorite character (historical or fiction) that you identify with?
    • Who is your ‘style icon’?
    • Have you recently seen a music video or album cover the really speak to you?

These aren’t the only approaches, but this is a good way to help get your creativity flowing!
