Musée Magazine Issue No. 20 - Motion

In Musée’s 20th edition, Motion, we explore how different artists perceive and express their unique idea of movement. Philippe Halsman’s photograph of Harold Lloyd from his Jump series leaps off the cover introducing us to the enticing energy found on every subsequent page. Christian Marclay sees motion as the passage of time, creating an installation where you can, quite literally, watch time pass by. Walead Beshty manages to not only freeze literal movement, but also creates a dynamic piece of art that is constantly changing, morphing, and merging the traces of its journey. Ryan Trecartin’s Animation Companion doesn’t translate into motion in concept, but the motion is omnipresent throughout the visual series. It’s not to say that the more literal definitions of motion are any less captivating, Norm Clasen’s Marlboro photographs captured the romanticism of the wild, wild West and created a romantic ideal for women that hasn't abated with time.

Technology has had a tremendous impact on motion photography itself: when it was used, how it was used, and how it's being used today. We explore the roots of motion photography with a section dedicated to its history, featuring pioneers like Harold Edgerton, Eadweard Muybridge, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, among others. Also featured in this issue are Jenny Saville, Karine Laval, Paul Machliss, Louis Stettner, Paul Fusco, and Francesca Van Habsburg.
