    Prologue
This is the book I wanted when I started with Off-Camera flash. It’s the visual instructive. I have written it from a personal perspective, that is, this is how I would talk with you if we were standing in the room together shooting. This is the step I needed after doing lots of research and having the gear sitting there in front of me. This is the book where you have a friend tagging along that will look over your shoulder you kick the light a little bit across for you, this is an idea designed to get you out and shooting. It does gloss over a lot of theory but it gives practical explanations and problem solving to common questions. And yes I may not be 100% accurate on some little points BUT this is intentional to make it easier for you to get out there and get some images.

Before we go on, I'm going to make two main assumptions. Firstly that you know what shutter-speed, aperture and ISO are and the relationship between them. Secondly you know how to change all your settings to manual in your camera. Many times during a workshop I have found students come up to me stating my instructions are not working only to have Auto-ISO or something similar switched on.

These chapters are designed to teach the basics of off camera flash and as such we go back to everything manual and its limitations. Flashes have become very sophisticated over the last few years and are very intelligent. However if you rely on this intelligence you will not understand some of the fundamental underpinnings of "what and "how" is going on and will not be able to easily fix problems when they arise.

Let me start out by saying there is a hell of a lot about photography that I do not know. This book is a collection of my knowledge thus far and every day I aim to learn more. I still look at other peoples work and wonder how they did that and do I have the skills and the tools to pull it off. If I was given their brief how would I approach it? I have got to the point where I have had some success and wish to pass on what I have gained and genuinely hope that it helps you in your journey.

    What do you need?
    The basics are,
    -A flash
    -A stand
    -An Umbrella
    -A trigger of some sort
    -50mm f1.8
    -Some form of long lens
    -Shoot in RAW
    -Turn off Auto ISO
