What do you think about a chat option in the forums

I think this would be a good option as long as it's not a request line, so to speak

It would be good as long the stuff doesn't pull some stunt on us. Then it will be barrage of a little less decent messages

 

Chat solution: Discord server, only confirmed and established members not everyone until they earn it. Joinin Discord server should also require trophy points.

 

This is a good idea.

 

All it takes is one bad actor or a report and the discord server gets shutdown.

Plus I don't want to make a new discord user name.

In short, no.

This is a photography/videography forum. The chat would be expected to go round these topics.
Somebody might ask how to do this or that. This might involve sharing a photo or more to make a point. Photos would have impeded information that might reveal identities, which we don't want to reveal in the first place.

There are more dedicated forums on the net that can help members achieve good results. Fstoppers, CreativeLive are example of such forums that don't need to purchase anything to have access to discussions.

 

A simple chat feature lends itself to attributing an additional dynamic to the site and supplements already established members (as well as new, really). IOW - ya allow one to gain some base identity - especially since it's relatively sterile in the present sense. Usually any chat channel is simply benign by nature and more specific questions of substantive detail are relegated to PMs anyway - so at a surface-level - I personally see no potential 'harm' (of course, any knucklehead trolling or exhibiting bullying behaviour should be warned / tossed as per Mod assessment). I think the introduction of a fluid and expression-able thought /personality feature adds to the site; allowing it to breath to some degree for those who find it of benefit.

 

Sometimes, sadly many of them the Chat ends turning into a Forum Killer, here for the purpose I think it could be ok,in my experience with forums for some years as user and admin I have seen chats turning into the main thing and a lot of good stuff being missed into the chats, at some point some mods were trying to dig and grab the goods to record as posts for the community, and that created a even worst option with ppl just chatting and asking on the chat to turn the parts into posts!
